Meet Our Directors!

Troy Rexelle,
Instrumental & Vocal Music Director

 

Troy Rexelle graduated from East Union High School in Manteca, Ca. He then attended community college at Delta College in Stockton, Ca for 2 years. While at Delta he served as percussion section leader, a music lab technician, and a student conductor. He was awarded the Larry and Vivian Miller Music Scholarship and named the Fine and Performing Arts student of the month for academic and musical excellence. Mr. Rexelle was very active musically at Delta College as a member of the Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, and Concert Choir.

He then transferred to California State University Stanislaus as a music education major. He was awarded a scholarship for Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. He studied Conducting under Edward C Harris and studied Percussion privately with Galen Lemmon, principal percussionist of the San Jose Symphony.  He placed 1st in the CSU Stanislaus music composition festival and received the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia musical excellence scholarship. He is an honorary life member of the professional men's music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

 

Upon graduation Mr. Rexelle began his teaching career while working on his Masters Degree in Education. He completed his MS in Education in 2005 with an emphasis in cross-cultural curriculum and instruction. He has been listed in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" 5 separate occasions and has judged musical events throughout the state of California with the Southern California Judges Association and Pacific Coast Judges Association. He is a sought-after composer and arranger that provides services for school music programs throughout the United States.

Mr. Rexelle has been teaching for over 18 years as a public school teacher and has experience from Kindergarten to Community College. His groups have consistently placed within the top 8 at marching band competitions and have received superior ratings in concert and orchestra at festival. His winter percussion have taken circuit championships and His programs consistently send 15+ students to county honor ensembles and several students have made it to State honor ensembles, as well as a nationwide honor marching band. 

Mr. Rexelle is proud to be a Mustang and to have the opportunity to build the Mountain House High School music program into something that builds school pride and culture. So far, he truly has been able to achieve that, and we know that he will continue to do so throughout his time at MHHS. Our primary goal is to  become an elite program of performing ensembles that bring prestige, pride, and honor to the great community of Mountain House. 

Chris Hixon
Drama Director

 

Chris Hixon is the Drama director at Mountain House High School. After spending 12 years as the Drama teacher for Canyon Middle School in Castro Valley, Chris is happy to leave the long commute to establish a theater culture closer to his house. Before he became a teacher Chris spent 15 years as a professional actor. He went on tour throughout the Eastern seaboard and the Midwest. Chris graduated with a BA from Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA where he did  thesis work on community development through theater.

 

Mr. Hixon has helped found and grow 2 nonprofit theater groups. In 1994 he help build and grow the Pax , Fiat Cultural Center in Oceanside, CA. This was to provide the community with affordable access to the arts. Then in 2007 he helped join and grow the Castro Valley Dramatic Arts Academy. This was established to provide increased exposure to the arts and access to an academy style learning facility. He is on the board of directors and continues to teach and run programs for them. Chris is excited about growing and developing the theater community in Mountain House.

Leah Avery
Dance Director

 

Leah Avery is the Dance director at Mountain House High School. Leah has been trained in all styles of dance and currently serves as the dance department director for Mountain House High School and is the head coach of the MHHS Dance Team, Synergy. Leah began dancing in junior high and continued to let that passion push her to become a dance studio owner, as well as a teacher. She has spent the past 7 years teaching in public education and coaching teams throughout Arizona, California and Texas. Leah has received her Bachelors of Arts, Dance from Ottawa University and her Masters of Arts, Dance from California State University, Long Beach (Go Beach!).

 

Leah has been married to her high school sweetheart, David, since 1998 and they have two daughters, Kaylee and Alyssa. The family loves to spend time hiking, swimming, and going to disneyland.
